Life-Span Development Issue: Nature Versus Nurture The controversy of nature versus nurture has been ongoing for many years and has affected many areas of study, including life-span development. One may ask why argue over the issue of nature versus nurture. In a case in which a child is seen to have some type of development issue parents are quick to place blame on biological factors. On the other hand, scientists are quick to place blame on the parents, but in most situations scientists know that the answer is most likely a combination of both nature and nurture (Sameroff, 2010). Nature Versus Nurture Defined Nature versus nurture is a debate between scientists and researchers about which is the most influential in human development: nature or nurture? Nature is defined as the genetic inheritance of an individual. Nurture is defined as the environmental experiences, both biological and social) that an individual experiences during his or her life-span. Some people believe that nature is the most influential on development whereas others believe nurture is the most influential (Santrock, 2010). Those who favor the nature side believe that an individual grows in a chronological order that is affected by evolution and genetics. For instance, they believe because humans usually walk before they talk or speak one word before two words, everything in which a human does has a place in the chronological order of development. Those who believe in nurture believe that environmental experiences are what most important factors that aids in development. They believe that environmental experiences are biological and social. A biological environment can be in the form of nutrition and medical treatment and experiences. Social environments are those in which an individual interacts with family, friends, teachers, culture, television, radio, and the community
