Part one: Katherine wants to investigate if the time of day a plant is watered affects the growth of the plant. She hypothesizes that a plant watered in the morning will grow faster than a plant watered at other times of the day. 1. Identify the specific independent and dependent variables that will be involved in an experiment to test this hypothesis. Independent: time of day the plant is watered- dependent: how much the plant grows. 2. List at least five variables that should be controlled during the experiment. For each variable identified, give a specific suggestion for how it can be controlled during the experiment. 1. Type of plant- use all the same seed type 2. How much water is used on each plant- give each plant the same amount of water; measure it 3. How much sunlight- place each plant in an open area with no shady spots that could skew the experiment 4. Type of soil- use the same soil and don’t add anything to it 5. Weather conditions, dog peeing on plants- keep insects away from the plants and keep them out of other organisms such as dogs reach. Part two: Purpose: Does a candy cane dissolve faster in cold water or hot water? Research: To research my purpose, I will research the question being asked by searching the web for other experiments that are close to mine, and ask my class mates of their opinion Hypothesis: First hypothesis is the lower the temperature, the candy cane will dissolve faster. Second hypothesis is the higher the temperature, the candy cane will dissolve faster. (TESTED) Experiment: First, I will gather all my supplies. Then, clean my hands of course. I will then start with my experiment by start boiling some water onto the stove. All of my samples will have an equal amount of water and a candy cane. These samples are a cold temperature water, a room temperature water, and a boiled water temperature. After
