Mini Case: Developing Leaders at UPS 1. What are the major skills Jovita Carranza has demonstrated in her career at UPS that have made her a successful leader? Some of the skills that Jovita Carranza exhibits are shown from Highlight 2.1 on page 46 of the textbook: Skills | Description | Strategic thinking | Jovita oversees a $1.1 billion air hub. | Personal and organizational communication skills | She has gained these skills through her role as human resource manager, and developing relationships with her co-workers and employees. | Influential and persuasive | Jovita is both influential and persuasive, since she has taken the roles of managers, president, and vice president. | Manage diverse environments | Her roles have led her to different parts of the country, from Los Angeles to Kentucky. | Learning from experience | At the end of the case, Jovita stated, “intelligent people learn from their own experiences” (pg. 82). | Jovita Carranza also demonstrated plenty of skills that portray her success as a leader. According to the case, her skills of corporate achievements, determination, drive, innovation, and leadership earned her the title of Woman of the Year 2004 by the Hispanic Business Magazine. She is also described as committed and a hard-worker (pg. 81). Her commitment skill is shown through the many roles she acquired throughout her career. Also, her work ethic is illustrated through the short amount of time that took her to rise in position.
