A sports ministry is the name given to religious sponsored organizations that use sport to promote links between the religion and the broader population. Two prominent sports ministries are Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Athletes in Action. Both organizations focus on using athletics to promote Christian beliefs and values. They recognize that coaches and sports have a large impact on people on a national and global level. Both organizations recommend a style of participation in athletics that they claim values in moral and spiritual direction. The sports ministry of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A (PCUSA) based in Louisville, KY called Team Sweaty Sheep focuses on adult and young adult athletes in addition to student athletes. Sweaty Sheep encourages Christians that worship is movement in the acting out of our faith through a mixture of service and play. For example, as stated on Sweaty Sheep’s website and I quote “Play keeps us vital and alive. It gives us an enthusiasm for life that is irreplaceable. Without it, life just doesn’t taste that good.” In sports management class we were given an assignment to read four readings on the Baylor website that are related to sport and ministry. The first reading was an article. The title is Sports in the Christian Life, written by Michael P. Kerrigan. This article was very intriguing to me. It fascinates me that in this article it says that over last thirty years Pope John Paul II and his successor Pope Benedict XVI have supported the ministry of sport and are a great example of it. Pope John Paul II prior to his election as pope was renowned for being a good hiker, skier, and swimmer. This provided him with many opportunities to address the topic of sports and Christian life. Pope Benedict XVI spoke several times about this topic but what he was most known for on this topic was when he blessed the Olympic torch in St. Peter’s Square as it made its way to the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
