Media and Youth Gone To Far Introduction: The media has a profound effect on the way that society views youth today. The following report will examine youths in the media and the following will be investigated in this report: movies/TV soaps, current affair shows and newspaper articles. These media texts will be deconstructed to determine whether or not teenagers are portrayed in a positive or negative way. Findings a: Youth Representation In Films/TV soaps. It was observed that in the 2 movies ‘10 things I Hate About You’ and ‘American Pie’ that youth are represented in an unrealistic manner, which is portraying a negative image of youth in our society. It was found that in those two films, youth are represented as shallow, self-centred and irresponsible. In the film, 10 Things I Hate about You, young people were shown to be ignorant and irresponsible. Stupidity and ignorance are also used to describe the attitudes of young people. This was demonstrated when Chastity asked Bianca whether it was possible to be whelmed, since you could be overwhelmed. Teenagers are stereotyped as having no respect for the law in both films examined. An example of this was in American pie when TV shows are now taking there episodes to the extremes, so it was obvious teens are portrayed in a negative light. An example of taking it too far is in ‘neighbours’ a show, which is broadcasted on channel ten at 6:30. In most of the episodes, teenagers are shown to be hoons, drunks, idiots, drug addicts, rude and irresponsible. For example in a curtain episode, Andrew who is a main character is going out with Tasha but secretly going out with a girl called summer. Mean while Tasha finds out about the relationship and pulls the I’m pregnant trick out, so Andrew and summer will break up.
