While he suggests how to kindly treat one race of women, he emphasizes on how to womanize another. The culture associated with “How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl, or halfie”, believes that women will act accordingly, and should be treated based on their own culture and race. In “Girl” by J.Kincaid and “How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl or halfie” by J.Diaz both authors describe how culture influences the outlooks, and stereotypes on women. The expectations of females seen in “Girl” revolves around a strict set of cultural rules for women. Through oral transitions the girl’s mother spreads the beliefs of their culture.

Another rhetorical strategy Orwell uses is Classification. In which he classifies why people write into four reasons. The first one is “Sheer Egoism”, this means that people write for an ego boost. They want to be remembered for something and not just another face in the crowd. The second is “Aesthetic enthusiasm” which means the desire to make ones writing look and sound good.
A narrative essays lets you write from your heart and gives you more freedom. Narrative and descriptive essays both contain key elements that makes an appealing essay. The elements are the authors purpose, the intended audience, and the impact the essay had on the audience. In the essay I want a wife by Judy Brady an narrative and Homeless by Anne Quindlen a descriptive. The authors purpose for the essay I want a wife was to point out societies traditional expectations of a wife and how women are still looked at as tools.
It’s a relief to see that the women in Lesotho embrace women’s sexuality more than other neighboring African cultures. In many African countries, women are forced into being circumcised, while in Lesotho, they are encouraged to lengthen their labia’s to appear more attractive. Women are seen as sexual people with their own needs. “Although in Lesotho men’s sexuality is represented as being dominant and assertive, certain cultural practices define women as having agency in their own sexuality.” (Page 269)

Whether people agree with it or not or believe we really have as many as we do, we in America are given a very large scale in freedom in our opinions, thoughts and how we choose to voice them; on paper, out loud, etc. Because of this, many people have many different views and meanings for the world and things around us. Gloria Naylor’s piece A Word’s Meaning, and Julie Bosman’s piece The (No) Free Speech Movement, both show how people freely use terms, phrases, and outlets for such things differently, and also how some in communities may find their views different. Though both essays contain similarities between their minor focuses, there are certainly more differences between the authors, the styles and the content of their pieces. Gloria Naylor and Julie Bosman both went to college and participated, if not graduated with a knowledge of literacy and understanding of language and its effects.
The articles that I will be using for examples are, “Writing for an Audience” by Linda Flower, “Saying is Believing” by Patricia T. O’Conner, and “Writing to Change the World” by Mary Pipher. A good writer makes sure that the audience comprehends and learns something from the writing. In “Writing for an Audience”, Linda Flower states there are three areas a writer needs to consider when addressing their readers, “the reader’s knowledge about the topic, his or her attitude towards it and his or her personal or professional needs” (98). The elements author and audience are the most important because that’s why the author is writing, for the audience. Every author should be writing with a sense of purpose.

Milan Tomic Latin American Lit Professor Owens 22 Oct 2014 Essay #1 It is interesting to see the development of an identity for Latin American Literature as we read stories that truly start from the beginning of the settling of the Americas. Two stories that stand out to me are "An Old Women Remembers" and "The Squatter And The Don" in which they share a common theme of pride and empowerment of women, something rarely seen from writings in this era. Based on what we know of the times when both pieces were written, it is safe to say that the role expected of women is that of housekeeper, cook, and bearer of children. This notion at the time was probably the general consensus of about ninety nine percent of the male population, yet in both stories we see female characters with a very strong sense of pride and identity of their own. On the surface of Eulalia Perez's memoire "An Old Women Remembers" one would think that she is simply a women who fits the mold of the roles of women during that time.
