This is structurally emphasized by the layout of the novel on the page. It is clear through Fitzgerald’s use of paragraphs that there is a clear conscious thought which remains constant throughout. “At first I thought it as another party, a wild rout that had resolved itself into ‘hide-and-go-seek’ or ‘sardines-in-the-box’ with all the house thrown open to the game. But there wasn’t a sound.” The long sentence structure contrasts the shorter sentence that follows it. This consequently implies a tense sentiment amongst the characters, which further enforces the tension that Fitzgerald seems to create within this chapter.
In the story, the narrator says “and his being blind bothered me.” The narrator is a reflection of prejudice and the stereotypes in society. He expresses that his “idea of blindness came from the movies” and that in the movies “the blind man moved slowly and never laughed.”It is clearly easy to see that the narrator is judging a book by its cover. As the story progresses, Robert shows the narrator how to see things clearly and from a different perspective. For example in the story

In the first two pages Armin Greder exhibits the implications of belonging and not belonging and connotes the negative aspects associated with both, simply through minimalistic text and evocative imagery. As the book continues it relays the prejudiced attitudes towards the man and
Write about some of the ways Fitzgerald tells the story in chapter two. Throughout the novel Fitzgerald uses a variety of techniques to draw the reader into the story, in chapter two there is a lot of evidence of these techniques being used. In particular he uses pathetic fallacy and symbolism as well as shock. The opening of chapter two is illustrated by a description of the valley of the ashes as Nick travels with Tom through the Valley of the Ashes to New York to meet Tom’s mistress, Myrtle. In the description, Fitzgerald uses pathetic fallacy at the very start to portray the moods and emotions of the time.
Ethan is influenced by his grim surroundings and becomes a bitter, melancholy man. A lot of his sad nature has to do with his surroundings, as the barren and empty characteristics of Starkfield have forced Ethan to become bitter and pitiful. At the beginning of the story the narrator clearly states Starkfield’s influence on Ethan’s appearance: “He seemed a part of the mute melancholy landscape, an incarnation of its frozen woe, with all that was warm and sentient in him fast bound below the surface; but there was nothing unfriendly in his silence. I simply felt that he lived in a depth of moral isolation too remote for casual access, and I had the sense that his loneliness was not merely the result of his personal plight, tragic as I guessed that to be, but had in it, as Harmon Gow had hinted, the profound accumulated cold of many Starkfield winters.” (Wharton 13) A character’s attributes depend on the location he grows up on. His face looks as gloomy as the night, cheerless and bleak.
THE IMAGE OF PARSLEY In the poem “Parsley” the author Rita Dove uses very strong imagery throughout most of this poem. This usage of vivid imagery is placed in the poem in order to expose the harsh realities of the general’s psychological disposition and the oppression faced by the Haitian people to the reader. The imagery used in this poem gives a somewhat clear understanding of how the general became insane, the actions resulting from his insanity and how the significance of a single word affected the Haitian people. In the poem the author uses clear and precise details in order to explain the origins of the general’s insanity. An example o f this literary clarification occurs in the ninth stanza, this is where the author explains how the general’s mother died after she collapsed in the kitchen while baking skull-shaped candies for the Day of the Dead.
11/13/11 Analysis In Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, his use of diction creates a mood full of tension, conflict and turmoil. The trailer that was created also shares this feeling, with the use of multiple tense scenes adapted from the novel. More specifically in the beginning, Bradbury creates this mood by showing Montag’s conflict with himself and also after, with society, and during the climax where Montag is in conflict with Beatty. From the very beginning of the novel, Bradbury creates a mood of tension, turmoil and conflict when Montag questions the society he has followed until now. This change was stimulated by discussion with Montag’s new neighbor Clarisse.
The audience is challenged throughout the text, as the reader’s assertiveness and insight into Sallies character is provoked through literary techniques, such as simile, symbolism etc. The biography is also a mix of detective novel, so the reader discovers what happened to Sallie and what she stood up against. Her pain and suffering from abandonment is explored and described by Sallie Anne as well as her sister in the following insightful narration. “when pat (sallies mother) abandoned Sallie for the second time, that really fucked her up… when your mother makes a habit of walking out on you, it doesn’t do much for your self esteem” and Sally stated “if only I’d had my mother, things would Have been different”. These lines emphasize the dramatic impact the repeated abandonment had on Sallie, and the course her life took.
