When she speaks about Marianne, she says, "She was generous, amiable, interesting: she was everything but prudent." Austen weights the first half with pleasing commentary and gently undercuts it in the second. Compare this with her biting description of Mrs. Ferrars: "She was not a woman of many words; for, unlike people in general, she proportioned them to the number of her ideas." Austen begins innocently enough, but the conclusion of that sentence bitterly reveals to us the impression she wishes us to have. Reflection is necessary, for we must see the sentence as a whole.
Mrs. Mitty is characterized as a flat character in my opinion. You read the story and quickly discover that she is a woman that likes things done her way and tends to nag quite a lot. Whereas Walter Mitty is not only a daydreamer, but he tends to just go through the motions which are reflected in the dialogue between he and Mrs. Mitty. Walter Mitty seemed to get distracted quite easy when performing a task and always in his daydreaming, he tends to tie in whatever task he was supposed to be doing or he was doing with whatever he is daydreaming about. For example, when he was daydreaming about being an accused witness, he was in the area of the courtroom.
Hemingway uses this technique to truly duplicate how a conversation would actually take place. He does not use lengthy or very descriptive sentences. The vast majority of his text is short and concise. He avoids the use of direct statements and descriptions of emotion. This ties perfectly into his theme of masculinity.
By Matsuo Basho|My Original Piece:“The porcelain knob With beautiful blemishesLite up the dark world”By Simran Patel| Explanation of How Form Affects Theme In Matsuo Basho’s poem, the closed form haiku, affects the theme in multiple ways. Since the haiku is a short poem and only has a certain amount of syllables, it creates a mysterious aspect to the poem as not many details can be given. The author chose to use the vague form of a haiku for a reason, as it does not give enough detail to paint a picture of the character. In this sense the haiku can be interpreted in multiple ways and is easier to relate to, in regards to the theme of isolation. The haiku can relate to the possible isolation of the reader as it does not have enough lines and syllables to specifically describe who the character in the poem is.
In spite of this great amount of terms, a single word in English can be loaded with meanings. Fine, for example, has fourteen definitions as an adjective, six as a noun, and two as an adverb (Bryson 69). However, there are still gaps. English lacks words describing the middle ground between hard and soft, near and far. English has also a large number of negative words, like inept, disheveled, ruthless, unkempt, for which the positive counterpart is missing.
Proposal Thesis: 1. Device: the device that is prominently used during the novel was symbolism. 2. The use of symbolism is very influential to the text and how it is shaped because each symbol represents a passing/stepping stone in the narrator’s life. When first read, each symbol may seem unimportant but as I further read into the text each symbol became the entirety of the novel.
With the different characters in the story, the meaning of their names gave color and attractions to the story itself and to the readers. Each character involvement gave impact to the flow from the beginning to end. The research aims to identify the meaning of the names of selected main characters in the two books. By knowing the meaning of the characters names, the readers would be able to decipher how it affects their corresponding characteristics. How the characters move to make the whole story in the two given books were also stated and sufficient examples and proofs were given.
This source gave most of what I would need to compose my research paper. This source gave information on Nikki Giovanni’s background and categorically dissected her poem “Ego- Tripping”. In doing so, I learned a plethora of historical facts along the way. I will be able to approach any angle of my paper having this source as a reference. Not only will I use this source in writing my paper, but it will also be used as a frequent teaching tool as I continue my education.
This story interested me clearly because of the elements mentioned above. The narrator’s point of view pulled me in with details of the setting, which made me feel as if though I was part of many moments. And, the descriptions of Phoenix the main character, had me seeing and feeling what she was seeing and feeling. Having a clear understanding of what literary elements affect a story will help you as reader connect with the story. Point of view The point of view refers to who tells the story—how the action is presented to the reader.
Imaginative Journey Essay ‘The Destination is not as important as the journey’, is a statement that applies extremely well to the study of imaginative journeys as journeys of this kind often don’t conclude at all but rather concentrate on the experience of the journey. My three texts, ’Strange Objects’ a novel by Gary Crew, Samuel Coleridge’s poem ‘This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison’ and the song ‘Fast Cars’ by ‘Tracy Chapman’ all illustrate the essential truth of this. The novel ‘Strange Objects’ by Gary Crew asks many questions but not all are answered. One of the main questions asked is ‘what is the mental state of the main character Steven Messenger’ and is everything in that happens in the novel actually real? Steven’s behaviour throughout the novel makes us believe that he has some type of psychological disorder.
