Work to Live and Live to Work

Are you a person who works to live or someone who lives to work? I guess you can say that I am someone who works to live; someone who would do anything just to survive. Let’s face it; it’s not easy to survive in a society such as ours. Darwin has taught us that those who strive, and those who “fight” are the ones that outlive the others. Because of this, many of us, including me, have had the misconception that work is necessary; that one should “make a living”. It’s funny how some people call it “making a living” when they’re actually miserable doing what they do. It sounds more like they’re “making an early grave” rather than making a living. Why? Because doing what you don’t want to do out of utter need to survive is not fulfilling at all. It is like adding gasoline to a burning house, you are just adding more stress, more problems, and more negativity to your life. Sure, some people have no choice but to do their jobs because they lack the education, or the resources, but for some of us who have a choice, it’s more satisfying to pursue what you enjoy doing. In school, you don’t really have a choice, you have to study, but you do have a choice in picking the course that you think is more enjoyable for you. That’s less stressful than picking a course that you don’t find fulfilling. When I entered college, I had the choice of choosing between Psychology and Med Tech, two subjects I thought I would benefit from because of my decision to go to Medicine. In the end, I chose Psychology because compared to Med Tech, I would enjoy it better even though I would benefit more from Med Tech. And even if I don’t enjoy some subjects in my course, I just consider them as inevitable sufferings from doing what you want.
