It’s a complex process, requiring in -depth knowledge of the needs and wants of the nursing staff and lots of creativity. “You have to know what motivates nurses to stay,” says Pamela Thompson, CEO of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. To that end, many hospitals regularly conduct retention or exit surveys to understand what’s on nurses’ minds. Leadership involvement is also important.

Unit 1 P5 Participate in a one to one interaction in a health and social care context. Communication in a health and social care environment is very important. When communicating with work colleagues I must make sure that I practiced active listening, by doing this I was able to ask questions when the points they made wasn’t clear and for me to also give my opinion on the discussion. There were many one to one interactions that took place in the GP surgery that I worked at. When I started my placement at the surgery I was assigned a mentor for the day, she showed me how to operate the booking system.

Facility administrators need to establish a balance between providing a safe environment, while at the same time providing each resident with opportunities for choice, control, and individuality (Kane & Kane, 2001). The staffing levels of professional nurses in a nursing home are not as high as that of a hospital; however, nursing homes have registered nurses on duty that perform assessments, administer medications, perform treatments, and interact with families and physicians, to name some of their many responsibilities. Nursing home residents often become ill. In 1997, there were 1,465,000 nursing home residents and 2.1 million elderly nursing home discharges due to hospitalization and death in the United States (Gabrel, 2000). When a resident is observed to have a condition change, the nurse performs an assessment and makes a decision whether or not to notify the physician and the resident’s family or guardian.

1. How would you define “Frozen Preferences” and what is the impact of this concept on strategy formulation, alternative analysis and recommendation? • Managers don’t like to make major strategic changes once decisions have been made (except in the case of overwhelming evidence) as they will look unprepared and ineffective and their creditability is damaged • Frozen preferences o Management has made a decision and over time analysis shows that their decision may not be the best choice o However they feel compelled to maintain their current strategy even if it is not the best course of action. • As management preferences becomes a larger part of the organization (personnel changes, budgets etc), it becomes more and more difficult to change direction. o A tendency to avoid reversing changes even if it was not the best choice o In reality, past expenditures are sunk costs and the organization should use a clean slate to look at new choices, but to the manager, this will come at great personal loss.
Leadership Questions NUR 492/ Senior Practicum: Leadership and Management May 25, 2015 Leadership Questions Every business, workplace, and organization has managers and leaders. With the recent uncertainty and changes in healthcare delivery, it is essential that the nursing profession has effective management and leadership to lead the way toward managed care and quality outcomes. Nurses at all levels are trained to manage patient care through collaboration with and delegation of tasks to support staff; therefore, all nurses are managers and leaders in their own right by virtue of their daily practices. However, if everything came together appropriately, Goldstein could forcibly close the discount and earn an exceptional return when he has free reign over the fund’s strategy. Getting into this position is very difficult for an activist investor such as Goldstein because it required pleasing many parties with conflicting interests. Management of the funds would be reluctant to reduce the fund size in any way as it would cut into their annual fees. Shareholders were most interested in an effective return on their investments. And, investors in
