Favor Mbamalu Mrs. Scott-Jackson How the Civil War Affected the Roles of Women 12 January 2018 How the Civil War Affected the Roles of White Women Before the Civil War began, southern wealthy white women were only known to cook, take care of children, and were limited to only performing household tasks. Working-class southern white women were known to work and also perform the same household and domestic tasks that wealthy white women did. Thankfully, the Civil War gave these women a big chance to prove themselves by performing serious tasks that only men were known to do. The Civil War was very important in changing the role of women because they took on ¨man roles¨ like their husbands’ jobs, being nurses, spies, and even being soldiers and fighting in the war! For well-off southern white women who stayed at home during the war, there was a lot of responsibility to take on.
The Masters would use the children as bartering tools when African American women would refuse to engage in certain things that the master wanted her to do. In many cases the African women would have sex with the Master so that their friend, husband etc. would not be beaten or killed. Woman are very strong creatures and they seem to have had very good instincts when it came to what would help to prevent another occurrence whether a woman knew how to read or not she was able to assist with orchestrating a plan to escape slavery. Men definitely did not do it alone and if all you pick up is the books that are only given in schools you will miss so much more in depth information about how they assisted with all that we have today.
The needs of British manufacturers certainly did contribute to the expansion of the slave trade from 1760 – 1800 as they needed all sorts of materials for making what they did, However, there were other factors that contributed as well such as consumer demand, the profitability of the slave trade, the need for a labour force on the plantations and the development of the triangular trading system. Consumer demand was high during the slave trade from all types of industry for example; coal, metal, and ship building materials needed to make the ships that would trade and transport slaves were high on the demand list. It wasn’t just the industries demanding, it was the British public who now had a taste for the Caribbean goods such as sugar, rum, tobacco, coffee and cotton for clothes. The introduction of tobacco had high demand as people would become literally addicted to it. So this was also a key factor in the expansion of the slave trade.
Unlike Saudi Arabia today, East Asian women bind their feet to make them appeal more attractive to men. In Western Europe women had more freedom; women were allowed to hold more high ranking positions. They were also able to coerce men into political aqcuistions (some women were heavily involved in politics even though they couldn’t hold office). Anne Boeyln, King Henry VIII second wife was one of the few who actually cared about politics;she was eventually beheaded but her legacy lives on because she was able to make Henry divorce Catherine of Aragon. Western European women were more civilized and were able to voice their thoughts, even though they weren’t able to hold office they were extremely valued in advice on political matters but not matters of war.
In short, indentured servants were mainly poor British people without jobs. This process included young men/women binding themselves to masters for a fixed term of servitude in return for passage to America, food, and shelter. Some indentured servants chose to come to the colonies willingly, often trying to escape troubles in England, but not all. Some were convicts shipped to America while others were prisoners from battles. Regardless, the system of indentured servitude proved to be very appealing to those able to employ them.
This period of time though was necessary to spark later movements for women’s rights. They learned of the freedom and independence they could have if they were to do things for themselves rather than doing what they were told to do with their lives. Just from seeing that production levels rose despite millions of men being called into the war proved that women could do as good of a job as men in these factories. Having black women in these jobs as well was a major step forward in the United States. The downside is that the economy could not sustain having jobs available for both these men and women once the men arrived back home from the war.
This is due to the peculiar role of Great Britain. Britain enjoyed a rising standard of living during the eighteenth century, in result of good harvests, booming overseas trade, and a growing population. Britain was the world’s leading exporter of clocks, tools, hardware, guns, and other craft goods. Its metal and mining industries employed engineers willing to experiment with different new ideas. It had the largest merchant marine and produced more ships, navigation instruments, and naval supplies than other countries.
According to an article in Slate On, the poor and low income people in our society are more overweight than the wealthy. This psychological behavior transcends to other cultures as well, telling me that people don’t really want equality but superiority. Regardless of the parts of the world you are from, someone always wants to feel superior to someone else. Though Americans did inherit the “wanting more” trait from the frontier opportunities, there were an influx of other nationalities flocking to America for the same opportunities (82). Likewise, they too have adopted the “hunger for more” mentality because they are financially able to adopt the psychological want.
Your salary is very likely to increase over time with experience and special certifications. It’s been found that many nurses decide to advance their degrees after already working within the field because of the pay. If a nurse decides he/she would like to advance sometimes a company will actually pay for the education. This is an extreme benefit of nursing. Other benefits include child care and also bonuses(“Registered Nurse
Kitty, however, fit more so in the background as her role was not as instrumental in the actual scheme of selling drugs. While Cecelia and Stopper were more hands on, they also set parameters as they primarily sold to other women in an attempt to create a safer space and avoid belligerent and potentially dangerous male customers. Though women were stepping out and making themselves more noticeable in different arenas, the drug arena was still not exactly the ideal place for women to earn a living. Kitty played more of the traditional role, working under her husband, and the father of her child, Splib, as opposed to making a name and way for herself to exclusively providing for her two-year old son. Unlike the men, women didn’t desire the chance to seem tougher than what they were.
