Many debates have happened whether or not these women approach feminism for their time period. The answer to that is ambiguous and depends on how the reader takes in their writings. One can say that even though Wollstonecraft is so obviously pining for co-education, and in that way to be equal to men, she is not promoting equality for anything else. By not wanting to be equal in anything else, how can she be approaching feminism? Pizan so obviously from the start of her writing, introduces how women should behave (from the perspective of a princess), so that her actions shall be beneficial to her and her husband.
As Ellen begins to go deeper into this debate she explains why so many women change their name. The women she asked, who have changed their names, told Ellen they changed their names because “it's what's done.” Ellen feels that this tradition of changing your name was put into place because wives used to be treated as property, and needed their name to be changed to prove their commitment to their husband. Today women are no longer treated as property. Women are able to choose their husbands, whereas in the past the girl's parents usually would choose for a man her. Even though there is no need to have a name change, no need
The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love Okay, so not only do I want to start out by saying that this was a lot of reading on this one topic, but more importantly that it was so confusing and kind of twisted that it was very difficult to read and follow what she was actually trying to say about it all. Throughout most of the reading I felt that Stephanie Coontz was basically just giving us a run down of the evolution of marriage. I felt that she would state a time period and how marriage was percieved during that period and then she would just go on to tell us a littlebit about the history of the people who took part in marrying during the time period as well. However, I did find it helpful that Coontz split the information into little segments,
Body: Main point I: There are many reasons why female circumcision is done. First, it is a Rite of Passage from childhood to complete womanhood, who is chaste, pure, and ready for marriage. Families want their children to be successful and children themselves want to attain status. There is status to both the elder, who circumcises, and for the circumcised. Female circumcision for women is a way of purifying them of their masculinity.
A Reflective Response to Marriage: Then and Now Stephanie Coontz Thiana Richards HUMA 024-7G Kerry Potts Wednesday, November 14, 2012 George Bernard Shaw described marriage as an institution that brings two people together "under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions. They are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal, and exhausting conditions continuously until death do them part. Shaw was making fun of the idea that people should get married because they were in love, but little did he know that in the years to come that would actually happen. In the history of marriage, marrying for love was very rare and was considered a serious threat to social order. Marriage was more about picking the right in-laws than picking the right partner to love and live with.
Module 4 Answering the Opposition ITT Technical “The Latest from the Feminist Front” What was your initial reaction to Limbaugh’s claim that “feminism was established so that unattractive women could have easier access to mainstream of society?” My initial reaction was that Limbaugh was being disrespectful to women in general. Al women have a right to easier access to society whether they are attractive or unattractive. They are still women and women should be respected as much as men are respected. His statement is also very insensitive. What are two of Limbaugh’s main points?
She knows you'll say that selecting a lifelong mate is difficult to do before you’re all fully baked adults. But you have it all backward: You can marry first with the assurance that being married makes you ready for marriage. Sometimes people delay marriage because they are searching for the perfect soulmate. But that view has it backward. Your
They are concerned that women are becoming pregnant and simply saying, “O well, I’ll just have another abortion.” That is not the case. Women have the right to have an abortion because they will take time to make the right decision. They will make their decision in conjunction with their doctor, their family, and their clergy. That is the position many women are in, and being in that position they are qualified to decide to have, or not have an abortion. We should try to make it less likely for a woman to find themselves making the choice of whether or not to have an abortion.
Finally, Coontz brought forth if someone is not marrying for love but just for the status then what is the point of getting married. I do agree with her about this and also, the point about the media blowing the idea of happily ever after out of proportion by just believing that only true love will hold a marriage together that is false. True love can bring people together but would not keep them together, this is something that marriages cannot solely rely on it takes hard work and dedication to keep a marriage
On the other hand some people argued that late-term abortion should not be banned because it is necessary to terminate a fetus when the life of the woman is in danger as a result of complicated pregnancy; or when pregnancy result from incest or rape and the woman may be late in finding out that she is pregnant. Late-term abortion is also favored when the fetus genetic defect,
