Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Mary Lou Lamer NUR/405 January 25, 2013 Dawn Warner Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Introduction “Although it is necessary to identify health risk factors among individuals and groups in the community, it is of paramount importance that nurses learn to identify and work with health problems of a defined population or the total community”. (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, pg. 395). The “windshield survey” is one method that the nurse can use to collect data about a particular community, however, understanding the meaning of community, community health, community as a client, and partnership, as they relay to nursing in the public setting, is important to successful data assessment. Community “Community is a locality – based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting society’s institutions, informal groups, and aggregates”.
One nursing intervention that could have a positive impact the community is organizing specific programs for the members of the community with neighborhood resources. Neighborhood meetings could be held monthly so that the members can get together to make resolutions to problems within the community. Here is where they can evaluate community resources and discuss ways in which they may become politically active in requesting much needed services for their community. There are some community health partnerships that can assist organizing neighborhood health functions. The American Heart Association can set up a free health screening program in the local Safeway or Rite Aid stores in the neighborhoods.

This broad definition of community health includes the dimensions of process, status, and structure. Assessing community health requires the collection of existing data, generation of missing data, and an analysis of the resulted compilation of data. The community is the client when the nursing effort is concentrated on the joint welfare of the population instead of just on the health of a single individual. The goal of population-centered healthcare is to accomplish helpful change intended to increase the benefit of the entire community as a collective whole. My impression of my participating family’s community and environment is extremely positive.
Franklin, Monica F. Buscemi, Carolyn Case Management July 14, 2009 Exploring Sectors of Case Management The purpose of this paper is to explore a sector of case management that interest me and possible agencies within the community that I could refer my client to. The sector that I find most suitable for my experience and interest is in a family therapeutic setting. My secondary source would be the internet, pamphlets about my town, or even citizens of the town. Potential site 2 is the Fox River, Geneva, IL. This location runs through my town, including the downtown area and the parks. This site is also 100% accessible and close to where I live. My primary source for the information about this landscape would also be analyzing it by walking along it and kayaking down it.
