Wind, Sand and Stars Reflection

“A handful of men who possessed nothing in the world but their memories, were sharing invisible riches.” (Saint-Exupery, 29) Wind, Sand and Stars is a story not only of flying, but a story also of soaring. Antoine shares his experiences of literally flying as well as his inner growth, which he describes as the soaring of the human spirit. Flying itself is like a comparison to the human soul. Like a pilot, there are moments when our inner self is only capable of flying so high. As humans, we carry many imperfections, and are raised in a society that expects us to act like we have it all figured out. We struggle with personal battles, yet are expected to keep it to ourselves and put on happy face for the world. But lets face it, “we forget that there is no hope of joy, except in human relations.” (Saint-Exupery, 27) Life is a journey and you never truly know what will happen next. For this, we need the support of those closest to us. Going off to college is a much more difficult transition than led to believe. The workload and studying is far more extensive then high school, and you don’t have mom washing your clothes for you anymore. However, the hardest aspect is neither of those. It’s leaving behind everything you’ve known and people you care a lot about. Antoine expresses in the book about his own relationships saying how “old friends cannot be created out of hand. Nothing can match the treasure of common memories, of trials endured together, of quarrels and reconciliations and generous emotions”. (Saint-Exupery, 27) He communicates beautifully with those words, giving the reader a bit of advice. We spend years growing up together, building strong relationships and memories with people, that it is hard to imagine having to leave and start all over again. “Life may scatter us and keep us apart; it may prevent us from thinking very often of one another.”
