Widespread advertising is bad for society Do you really want to buy things you don’t need and then regret it? The levels of advertising are just too much these days. People cannot walk down the street, ride on a bus, watch television or read an email without seeing advertisements. People shouldn't have to have their lives attacked by a huge quantity of information they might not want. Advertising has grown to be an industry worth many billions of dollars across the world. Whilst this helps companies sell their products, and helps consumers to learn what is on offer, many believe that this huge amount of advertising can be harmful. People cannot just choose to ignore advertising, because first of all, there are advertisements everywhere and second of all advertisers use many secret methods to get their message across such as posters that have attention grabbing words, or provocative pictures. Some advertisements are even being hidden in things like public information so people don’t realise they are being promoted to. By targeting people's unconscious thoughts advertisement is a form of brainwashing that takes away people's freedoms to make choices. Advertising has made people stunned by the endless need to decide between competing companies for their attention. Recent research shows that people on average are less happy than they were 30 years ago, even though they should be happy that there are more choices available to spend their money on. Advertisements make people’s expectations high about the product and can lead to unavoidable disappointment after it is bought. Shoppers feel that a poor purchase is their fault for not choosing more sensibly, and regret not choosing something else instead.
