Why Would I Be a Teacher? Lynnette Sharrer Grand Canyon University EDU 310 February 26, 2012 One of the most challenging but rewarding careers is a teacher. Besides challenging and rewarding, a teacher is one of the most important professions. A teacher is the one teaching children to become other professions. A teacher creates the foundation for students in which they build their lives forever. There are many reasons why one would choose to become a teacher, but I chose teaching as a career because I love children and want to make a difference in each student’s life. A teacher benefits from extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. An extrinsic reward is a physical award that can be seen, where an intrinsic reward is the feeling felt when accomplishing something. Extrinsic rewards for a teacher are job security, convenient schedules, steady pay, and vacation time. Intrinsic rewards for a teacher are the emotional rewards; working with children and knowing you are contributing to society by shaping future generations, enjoy working with young children, and a feeling of achievement in students’ accomplishments. Although a teacher will never get money rich from teaching, a teacher will get rich from the feelings attached to teaching. According to Anon (n.d,), “ A hundred years from now it not matter the sort of house I lived in, what my bank account was, or the car I drove…but the world may be a better place because I was important in the life of a child or one of God’s creatures on this earth.” Choosing a career as a teacher realizes that one will encounter great challenges with little financial reward, but knowing the rewards come from other ways. The rewards of teaching are a benefit, but one must realize the commitment to students a teacher makes.
