Why Wear Sunscreen? Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to wear sunscreen in some form when going outside. Central Idea: People should wear sunscreen everyday when going outside, to prevent skin cancer and or to prevent sun spots. Introduction I. What is sunscreen? II. What is sunscreen and what does the SPF mean? Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. ("Skin cancer foundation") SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a measure of a sunscreens ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. ("Skin cancer foundation") III. In 2008 59,695 people were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin, which is deadly. 8,623 people died for the melanoma skin cancer. (Centers for Disease Control) IV. Those statistics are in the United States only. Imagine what a huge number it would be for the whole world over such a simple task as to put sunscreen on. It is shocking how many people won't put sunscreen on or think it isn't a big deal. V. Today, we will look at the issues with over sun exposure to the skin and exposure without sunscreen as well as with sunscreen. I'll encourage you to wear sunscreen as a part of your daily routine. (Transition: We know that the health of the world is at risk, and that more people need to know what the sun is doing to their bodies. Tanning isn't important when it comes to our lives. Lets look at the problems with not wearing sunscreen and why people don't wear it.) Body 1. Many people often don't wear sunscreen because they think its a waste of time or that they won't get tan.
