Why We Crave Horror Movies Stephen King is widely popular when it comes to horror movies. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of him is his horror movies and how frightening they are. I do agree with him when he says his movies “do have a dirty job to do". (King, 1981) That job is to feed us fear which he does a good job at. I somewhat agree with how “they feed the hungry monsters in our psyche”. (King, 1981) When we get angry, some people think little crazy thoughts, but it does not mean that we are going to reenact what we see. Most people are sensitive to the blood and gore they see from his movies. The effects of a horror movie have on an individual are anxiety, sleeplessness, or even phobias. We just can’t get enough of Stephen King horror movies. Even if we have discomfort from the effects after we watch them. In 1990, I was nine years old when I first saw “Stephen King’s “IT”, a movie I was not supposed to see. I always wondered why people crave horror movies. My parents were out that night, so it was a good opportunity to see this movie with my brothers. “IT” is about a demon that disguised itself as a clown. The clown goes out hunting for children to kill in a small town. Before the demon kills, it can transform itself into anything that the child fears the most. In this small town, children had been disappearing right from their own back yards. Seven local children all became friends. Each of the children discovers the clown to be a demon, so they came up with a plan to kill it. They all thought their plan worked, but as they became adults they found out the clown was back in their home town so they all came back to kill it for good. As we watched this movie, I felt a rush of anxiety just come over me. In one scene, the clown just appeared as one child was outside playing in the backyard. It killed the child gruesomely. thought
