Vietnam wasn’t fighting for Australia, so why did Australia actually fight in the Vietnam War? The War didn’t even involve around Australia but why did Australia fight? What did Australia want to keep? There must have been reasons why they fought and this essay will tell you exactly why. Australia went to war in Vietnam for a multiple of reasons. For instance Australia strengthened their alliances by fighting with the US in Vietnam so the US will return in favour if Australia was under threat; for containment so we could all completely wipe out communism spreading from larger continents such as Asia and Europe; for the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization for collective defence as Australia was part of this program; to gain politically so Australian party’s such as the Liberals Menzies can program Australians to expel ‘communists can’; to help stop the growing tension between the communists USSR and the democratic USA so Australia can strengthen their defence alliances but mostly and mainly was because of the Domino effect. Australia greatly feared the Domino Theory as because as a country next to theirs (Indonesia, South Vietnam) is in danger with communists then Australia must defend itself and its security because Australia did not want to become communists as their neighbouring countries will so that’s the main reason why they fought in Vietnam, to stop the domino effect.
The Vietnam War (1955-1975) was a War between North Vietnam who were communists and South Vietnam who were democrats. The USA was allies with South Vietnam and this was USA’s longest war they took part in. The North wanted to end the alliance with the US and make Vietnam a single nation of communists.
