Why Teachers Should Be Able to Pack Heat

Peter Nguyen 2/7/12 Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado marked one of the deadliest school shootings to ever occur. Along with many other school shootings, they tend to happen because of the students that have some emotional or mental problems. There have been actions that have been made to enhance the security in schools such as applying metal detectors and hiring school police. This will not stop the school shootings altogether. In order to provide a safer environment where danger can be resolved more efficiently, teachers and faculty should be allowed to carry weapons in school. Typically, school massacres happen in the more suburban areas where the police stations are farther away so that even if the enforcements were notified of the occurrence, more than likely they would not make it to the scene in time resulting in the perpetrator getting away. If the teachers in the schools were able to pack heat, they could take action against the culprits. Not only will this save more lives, but the number of school shootings will drastically decrease as everyone would not attempt a school invasion as they are aware that the staff is well-armed. Some (mainly parents) may oppose to this proposition as it may be an awkward environment where students are trying to learn but are feared by the knowledge that the very person standing in front of them teaching, is armed with a dangerous weapon. And who is to say the teachers themselves would not commit a crime? Not every person in the world is “good” and it’s not always the students that are to blame. There have been records of teachers that were unable to teach because of their emotional instability or mental illness. Knowing this, any teacher could pull off a well-devised plan to wipe out everyone simply because no one would have suspected them. However, it is rarely likely
