Shakespeare was a popular poet and playwright. Even if writing styles and ‘norms’ have changed, Shakespeare has still left his mark on the modern English language. Shakespeare invented the language we see today whether you know it or not. ‘The Tragedy of King Richard the 3rd’ was a revolutionary play of its time due to its appeal of all classes ranging from the noblest Queen to the street pheasant. King Richard also explores the concept of what it means to be evil; Pacino’s film reflects this giving an insight on the faces, motives and free will of Richard. Shakespeare’s integrity lies in his accessibility to an audience and his ability to explore values within his plays. King Richard is a man who presents copious ideological characteristics and also throws into confusion many traditional values set into the mindsets of the Elizabethan and post-Elizabethan peoples. The opening lines of the play have Richard speak directly to the audience in the form of a soliloquy ‘Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this son of York,’ this metaphor is a direct link to the character of Richard, a man who is discontent.
The facets of Macbeth are a representation of how our society still functions, thus, the human nature that cannot be eradicated- what it means to be human, something irreplaceable between the eons and countries despite all the disparities in status, culture and knowledge. The themes in Macbeth- ambition, guilt and conscience and violence- are still pertinent in today’s society. Shakespeare has encapsulated the true essence of an era that is amazingly still prevalent now. Macbeth is a nihilistic play about ambition that has driven out of control. The Weird Sister’s prophecies are what sparked both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to fulfil their penchant to be King and Queen of Scotland; however, the sister’s do not force anything upon them.
Though they both deal with the same concept that he who hold great power is not far from or is already corrupted they are both presented in different ways. In both text power drives the plots in a way that creates high amounts of tension and suspense that keeps the audience intrigued. Both writers; Orwell and Shakespeare, use contrast between characters and inner conflict in very different ways. This is used in order to support the tension and suspense that was created. For example in the play Macbeth we are aware of Macbeth’s inner conflict which results in us (the audience) to sympathise with him.
Rhetorical Analysis of Marc Antony’s Speech Shakespeare wrote many great plays in his time, one of which being the story of Julius Caesar. Although Caesar was popularly known as a war general and tyrant, Shakespeare shows us a different side of this great man through the speech of Marc Antony. Not only does Marc Antony appeal to the citizen present in the play, but he brings forth an empathetic view point from those reading or watching the play, as well. Marc Antony’s speech was one of great emotion and passion, used to persuade the crowds and the observers of the play that Caesar was not a horrible man. This is also an early use of characterisation which lets the audience know that Macbeth’s character now has a spark of ambition in his mind. Furthermore, we notice that Macbeth generally speaks in “lambic ventonater” which elevates him above the commoner’s “prose”, thusly making, his conflict with himself more important. The film ‘O’ is perceivably understandable because of the modern adaptations of characters, surroundings as well as music and lyrics.
