Why Study Economics Starting in high school, people are pushed to study economics. However, it is rare that students know the reason behind that push. The question is often raised: Why do we study economics? There are many answers to this question. The most common and agreed-upon answer is that the study of economics provides a great amount of knowledge for the future. When you learn about exchange rates, interest rates, statistics, and how the business world really works, you are given the opportunity to make good decisions in the future—financially, politically, and career-wise. The knowledge gained from an economics course will lead you to think twice about future investments and mortgages, and about how you use your credit card. You will know when to buy, when to sell, and what to invest in. You learn more about the impact decisions have on the firm, industry, and national level; the impact of international trade, both good and bad; and the effect government policies have on the economy and on employment, again both good and bad. This will help many people who intend on being involved in politics or the news industry in that they will be more economically literate and be equipped to make the best possible decisions for the good of our society.
