Why Some Children Slip Through the Cracks For children who do not have the fortune of being raised by their parents, either because of some tragedy or the intervention of the state, there are still options that the child may have a happy and fulfilling upbringing. Children who are given up by their parents, or those who lose their parents by some other tragedy, may be able to find new families who will give them just as much of the love and nurturing that a biological family could. One way that children may find a new family is through adoption. However, adoption is not always possible, and some children may be put into foster care. The foster care system in America is a very valuable resource for children, and may give them options for having a secure upbringing and finding love that they could not have had without it. In this way, the system is very good and a benefit to society as a whole, because it helps to take care of children. However, sometimes there are cases where children "fall through the cracks" and they are not taken care of well, or they end up in bad or unsafe situations. Although the foster care system is a blessing to many children and is a benefit to society when it works well, because of the number of children in the system being so large, and the number of people willing to help is, by comparison, too small, sometimes the system breaks down and children suffer. The biggest reason facing why the system is inadequate to help all the children in foster care is that there are simply too many of them. With so many children in the system it is almost impossible that each one can be taken care of well. There are not enough families, first of all, who are able to arrange their lives and their schedules to take on foster children.
