Who can possibly bear to watch a loved one suffer? What if they were in a vegetative state, and had no chance of recovering? What if they had asked you to help end their life if they were ever in this condition? Watching a machine breath for them, you are faced with the decision to help like they asked, or watch them suffer for, days, months, or perhaps years. What do you do? Should legalizing euthanasia be considered by our government? If so, in what way should it considered a viable option?
Debate continues over legalizing euthanasia. Euthanasia does not take place it is selected by patients, who are in great pain, and have the right to decide whether to live or not. Usually the decision is made to either pull the plug, or end treatment. There are also cases where the patients ask for an over dose of medication. Because patients choose to die, their death in turn ends suffering and there was no intention on anybody’s part to cause harm. So then why is Physician assisted suicide or euthanasia considered murder? Unlike murder euthanasia, euthanasia is not an act of violence if it is fulfilling a patient’s wants. Modern medical technology has allowed doctors to prolong life past the point of natural death. In the case for euthanasia doctors should be enabled to assist a suffering human life in a comfortable death. Patients are now beginning to assert their rights to die rather than being kept alive forcibly. For example, a man who suffered severe burns in a gas explosion, wanted to die even though he survived the accident. He believes that his rights were violated by the doctors who prevented his natural death, through life sustaining treatment. When a patient like this is in constant pain, death becomes a peaceful reward. Additionally, doctor assisted euthanasia is (and should be) always performed with the full consent of the patient. Murder steals life, while euthanasia gives the patient release.
