Why protect the Environment and How? There a number of reasons why the environment should be protected, these reasons ranging from the need to conserve habitats and the species that live within them to the need to retain valuable environmental defences which in turn protect resources of an organic and inorganic nature. For example it is important that habitats and species be conserved as these aspects of the environment can be negatively affected by increased human activity. For example it is not only important that we prevent the extinction of organisms from a moral point of view but also that we prevent this extinction so that potentially economically important organisms can be identified. A number of rarer plant species for example are used in a variety of industries including those based around pharmaceutical production (Raven et al., 2003). Also through preserving rarer plant species within various habitats we can prevent the creation of monocultures and so lessen or prevent the effect of environmental anomalies or disease (Bracken, 2008). As mentioned above there exists a variety of organic environmental structures which perform a number of defensive actions, whether these being direct and physical or indirect and chemical. It is therefore important that these organic structures be conserved so that the effect of natural or man-made anomalies can be lessened or prevented; with these effects being multiplied as our dependence and reliance upon the environment increases. Another advantage to maintaining these natural defences is that in many locations these defences are already in place as a result of natural dispersion, therefore there is no need to spend time and money on setting up these defences. With this lack of cost allowing for money to be spent either maintaining or protecting these structures that are already in place. Due to the importance of
