When Perfect Isn’t So Perfect Mr. Incognito 1. “Mr. Lovewell” by Mercy Me 2. “Look At Me Now” by Chris Brown 3. “Hello” by Beyoncé 4. “Envy” by Tedashii 5. “Space Bound” by Eminem This soundtrack is a depiction of my interpretation of the short story “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson. Richard Cory was a wealthy well recognized man around the town and everyone adored him. He masked his pain with good looks and fine things and the entire town envied him. On the inside, however, the pain bore so deep and was left untreated and led him to kill himself. These songs tell the captivating story in modern times. It is as if there was a bridge between the literary world, and ours. It is as if literacy and music are one. Using diction, imagery and a tone, the story of Richard Cory was able to bring the story to life. 1. “Mr. Lovewell” by Mercy Me I chose “Mr. Lovewell” by Mercy Me for my first song because although the words are not similarly matched with the short story I chose, the tone in the beginning of the song matches the description of Richard Cory in the short story. The song describes Mr. Lovewell “waking up every day the same, Believin' he's gonna make a change, Never wonders "if" but "when"”. In the story Richard Cory is admired immensely by the people in the town. He was “A gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored and imperially slim” (893). His very presence caused “fluttered pulses” (894). Because the words are so uplifting and optimistic, they match the characteristics portrayed in Richard Cory in the short story. For this reason, I wanted to I placed this song at the beginning of my soundtrack. It not only symbolizes the opening of my soundtrack, but also the opening to the “Richard Cory” short story. 2. “Look At Me Now” by Chris Brown I chose “Look At Me Now” by Chris Brown as the second song on my
