Unfortunately, the FCAT does not evaluate student’s performance correctly due to students that fall under pressure. The pressure that student’s feel and encounter is also known as test anxiety. According to Channel 7 reporter Erica Rakow’s in the article “FCAT Stresses Students Out, she claims” The responsibility of passing both reading and math portion of the FCAT in 10 grade adds a stressful ambiance to students who really do not want to retake it as a junior (par.2). Rakow also points out “That responsibility includes promotions to the next grade, and future funding for their school. Some students get so worked up about the test they can’t even get through it (par.3).
They stress day and night over these overrated tests, like previously stated channeling out the imagination, curiosity and good will. Besides being an imprecise measure for students, they use them to judge a teacher’s performance as well, essentially used to either reward or punish them. Standardized test are not helping us very much right now. In conclusion, the usage of standardized tests should be discontinued or by the very least lessened. These tests are not helping people, it’s initially having a negative effect on students and teachers.
NCLB was established so that students were not held back in a grade and were promoted to the next grade. I think this is a political aspect that is failing our students. If a student is not understanding the material or doesn’t pass the tests showing that they understand and can retain the information, I don’t believe that they should be promoted. I believe that it only hurts the students because they get more behind as they advance through the levels. The ethical issues that regard the high stakes testing is that it could be unfair to some students.
They always cheat in the exams. It makes them face a lot of issues. First, although they pass the test and grade but they will be lacking of knowledge. Second , they will be dependent on others. Moreover, if they are caught when they are cheating they will be expelled.
Renato Gomes English 102 09/09/2014 The believing and doubting game Claim #1 – A student should report a fellow student who is cheating on an exam or plagiarizing an essay Believe: If a student see other student cheating on an exam or plagiarizing an essay he should report it, because the student is taking advantage of the others, he is going to do better in a test than the ones the actually really study hard, that isn’t fair to the others. If the student cheat or plagiarize he or she won’t be learning anything besides how to search things on google, a lot people cheats because they want to do good in a test, but the same time they use to create different ways to cheat, they could be studying and actually learning like the others students, even if they don’t do so good in the test, but at least they are trying and learning. Doubt: The student who caught the other cheating on a test or plagiarizing an essay should not report it, because he is not being affected, he or she is learning, studying, doing the right thing , even if the student that was cheating do better in the final grade , he or she didn’t learn anything , what in the future will make the difference. Cheat on a test or plagiarism is a choice that every student have and some make this choice , so is their problem since they are the ones that are not learning, so that is no why the others students should report it if is not harming them. Claim #2 – Woman should be assigned to combat duty equally with men Believe: Woman should be assigned to combat duty equally with men because they should be treated like normal soldiers, if they pass their test they need to pass, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be able to be assigned to combat, passing the test, the soldiers show that they are capable of being on duty.
Lac is it good or the bad students. Many students would agree that it is bad for the student because it teaches them that when they grow up they should be unfair and unreasonable. They will do the same thing to other teens once they are adults, and adults and teens will forever be unhappy with each other. This would also make students lack intelligence because all that time they would be in LAC they could be learning their subject. It will also cause stress for the students because they will have a hard time learning there subject.
This is considered pathos because it is a great amount of pressure writing a paper and can be very tedious. She wants her audience to feel a sense of liberation, and she also wants her audience to understand that she too knows how it feels to be put under pressure. Another point Alonso uses in pathos is when she supposed “Examinations can indeed deal with trivia, they can be badly conceived and thus can cause needless anxiety in the students who struggle to make sense out of poorly-written or poorly-focused questions”(198). She is saying she wants to show other people that exams are the biggest test a student can take and the struggle students have to face during exam time and or writing a paper for final exams. A final point Alonso speaks is “Most damaging of all, perhaps, is the fact that professors are human beings and therefore they will sometimes grade examinations unfairly” (198).
Erica Goldson Valedictorian Speech Response Erica Goldson brought up a very controversial and very interesting topic about our current education system in the US. She states that students are so focused at memorizing data and getting good grades, that they miss out on the whole idea of learning and being educated. I agree with her, students should be learning and absorbing the material, instead of memorizing for the next big test and just forgetting about it later on. Graduating seems like the top priority in students nowadays, and to me that is just upsetting. And the students who are very talented and are very motivated to learn and be driven in a non-academic subject seem to have a more negative image than the people who are driven by academics.
This quote shows that the bullies are more concentrated on bullying their victims rather than their school work. This quote also shows that bullies are not very concentrated in school and will probably fail in school and not get a good career. Another example that shows that students are beginning not to care about school is, “Many of the victims are disengaged in school” (Wolpert 1). This evidence is important because the victims are scared of bullies and are really not concentrating in school like before they began to be bullied. Multiple victims who are hurt from being bullied are starting to fail in school.
The True Myth of Education: Standardized Testing By Arthur Ramirez University of Texas at El Paso Abstract Standardized testing has been a raging topic in society, is it justified to give these tests to students. Students are constantly pressured with test that might decide their fate. Students do not get properly taught on the subjects they are taking due to these tests. Tests are not correct since they do not take factors in to count. Tests do not take in to count the environment, the demographic, and especially what type of students is taking the test.
