The traditional canon of English Literature is dominated by a single type of author, the affluent white middle class male. It seems that the virtuosos at the top who deliberate over the canon of literature we all study from pertain to their own kind alone, acting indifferently towards any literature that quintessentially is not conventional in its complexity.   This extant doctrine criteria for ‘good literature’ is written by one group of people for one group of people and repudiates many texts from the canon which many readers would agree contain ‘complexity’ and ‘aesthetic unity’. The canon of literature must be diversified and made more comprehensive as to include authors such as Menna Elfyn who explores both profound political questions in ordinance with her Welsh heritage and the predicaments of domestic relationships in a number of her poems.   To retain the current canon as it is, would be to limit student’s access to the study of literature with ‘value’ that simply hasn’t been written by a middle class white man, ‘First, most of them are male (indeed it is not unusual for students’ lists to include only male writers)’ (Montgomery et al, English Literature Anthology, 2000). Our fundamental view or interpretation of a text is massively influenced by what we know of the author. Menna Elfyn’s ‘Double Bed’ and ‘Couplings’ are two poems which at rudimentary first glances seem to both explore a relationship or intimacy between individuals, nevertheless, when we learn about her bilingual pro-Welsh background and beliefs a new horizon is interrogated and the two poems yield more of a political discussion speaking about relationships between England and Wales. ‘Two in touch. That’s the craft we nurture in folding doubled flesh on a frame.’ This verse from ‘Couplings’ underlines the profound intimacy and convoluted relationship between two nations, setting Menna Elfyn’s work apart from conventional literature.
