Romeo and Juliet Essay A big part of the world today is literature. The definition of literature from Dictionary.com is, “writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays.” Some great pieces of literature include Romeo and Juliet, and To Kill a Mockingbird among others. So without it this essay would not be being written and nobody would be able to read it anyways. Literature gives knowledge and understanding to the world which creates a better society with more love, tolerance and less racism. One of the most known and one of the biggest contributors to today's literature is Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare. Not only did Shakespeare add over 2,000 words to the English language, he also created one of the greatest love stories. However that wasn’t the only lesson he gave today’s society. He also taught tolerance. In the end of the play The Capulet’s and the Montague's lose their daughter and son because of a feud that get’s way out of hand. If the two families had just solved the problem when it first started and tolerated each other no lives would’ve been lost. Today too often things like this happen that could be so easily avoided. However it would probably happen a lot more Not letting one little thing turn into a big thing is really important and so is not judging people. Learning about how bad racism is in To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet has really guided society in a better direction. In To Kill a Mockingbird a man is wrongly accused of raping a girl and ultimately loses his life because of this. The only reason why he ends up in jail is because he is black and no one will look at the actual facts. In Romeo and Juliet people are so racist towards each other just based off
