Why Learning a New Language Is Important Samantha S. French 1 8/17/12 Most people believe that since they know English, they don’t need to know anything else. But, over four-fifths of the world’s population does not speak English! Here are my 3 reasons why learning a new language is important. Learning a new language can increase global understanding, make travel more enjoyable, and improve employment potential. I cannot wait to understand the culture which I wish to learn! First of all, learning a new language can increase your global understanding because learning another foreign language gives you the ability to understand a different culture, people, and art. If you were to learn a new verbal communication, you would also be able to read foreign newspapers, watch news, and learn about what is going on in that country. You will also be able to have a better insight on that culture since you will be able to speak the language. If you were thinking of moving to another country, knowing the language and culture would be really helpful. Secondly, being multilingual will make travel much more interesting and enjoyable because you will be able to speak to the people of that country. You will also be able to understand/read menus, directions, and more. Also, you will be able to wander away from the tourist areas and explore the real country itself, eat authentic food, and get to know the natives. Lastly, knowing a language other than your own will improve your employment potential because many jobs require people who know a foreign language. Also, being multilingual will make you look smart and able to learn new things. Many companies need people who know another language because they can connect with other countries to sell their product. You will also be able to command a greater salary, which is good for anyone!
