Introduction “Why is the initial consultation so important? What factors should an ethical therapist cover at this time?” My aim in this essay is to demonstrate a clear understanding of the ethical issues surrounding hypnotherapy. Looking at the code of ethics which was developed from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics April 2010; which constitutes a moral code of principles and values which should always be adhered to whenever a hypnotherapist is practising. I will also be addressing why the Initial Consultation is unequivocally essential for any ethical therapist. The Initial Consultation. The first Contact Actually picking up the phone and making that initial contact with a hypnotherapist will, in most instances, have been an enormous hurdle which the client has surmounted. Your reaction as the therapist will be vital to the client engaging in the therapy. In making that phone call it is accepting that they need help with an issue. The first verbalisation is the first step to successfully resolving an issue. Admitting to someone else that you want to be helped is a terrific, bold and courageous step. The therapist gaining the client’s initial trust is vital. The therapist needs to be friendly, professional, empathetic and reassuring. The therapist should not be drawn in to having that all-important Initial consultation over the phone; it is important that the therapist sees the client’s body language in response to their questions. Only by talking to the client face to face and reading the client’s body language, will the therapist be able to clearly identify the modalities in which the client functions most often, and on which future screeds need to be designed around.
