You never know what someone has been through or is going through until you take the time to learn and understand them. And this is why I believe that the professional athletes now days deserve recognition because it hasn’t been an easy road to get where they are at today. To learn even more about what these players go through and how playing in this league has affected them, I decided to interview one of my old basketball coaches named Nancy Jones. Her father named Darrall Imhoff, is a former NBA player so I thought that she would have a lot of great personal experience. She had always talked about her dad and told us that she learned many great coaching techniques from him.

Thokozile Nkosi W130/Bye 14, September, 2012 Culture and Success In author and publisher, Gary Colombo’s essay “Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths”, he claims that culture greatly affects our lives. He asserts, “our most dominant cultural myths shape the way we perceive the world and blind us to alternative ways of seeing and being” (4). Here, Colombo demonstrates that, depending on what our culture thinks is acceptable our point of view could hinder us from experiencing different things or different point of views. Likewise in writer and civil rights activist, Malcolm X’s essay “Learning to Read”, he discussed how his vocabulary was perceived as great when he talked to other people on the street, but when it came to talking to an educated person like Mr. Elijah Muhammad. Elijah Muhammad was an African American religious leader and Malcolm X’s mentor.

Patrick Prince The basketball is taken out of its package. Air is pumped into tit. The ball is ready to be used. Everyday the ball is dribbled on the court, shot at the basket, kicked and thrown when people become frustrated and then put back in its rack. The ball goes through this same routine for years.
However, priming introduces a fluid aspect to studies of cross-cultural usage of pronouns since specific context can induce favorability toward either collectivist or individualistic mindsets (Oyserman & Lee, 2008). This tendency to either segregate or connect appears to interact with interpersonal assessments. Perceived reasons for individual behaviors by members of individualistic cultures are more likely to result from judgments based on ascribed attributes or traits, while those made by members of interdependent cultures are more apt to incorporate contextual or situational elements (Church et al., 2006; Na & Kitayama, 2011). Perhaps one of the clearest examples of this dichotomy exists in Western academic traditions, which continue to be subject to European notions of separateness that have produced what Gusa (2010) describes as an
Ankhtur Bolor-Erdene Professor Melissa Qualls EPP 150.05 Sep/03/14 Journal #2 Number #1 According to the “Barriers” which was written by Rolando Niella, it tells us about it is so difficult to talk to a person whose level is higher than you in their own language even though you have experienced or not. Especially, there is a big difference of talking in your first language and speaking in your second and learning language. Also, the level of native speaker will be in more advanced level comparing to your learning language. The most interesting part from the reading for me was the author related his experience to a sport that most of the people like and they know it is tough to start it from the beginning. Plus, when he said “I know how to hold the racket and basically hot to hit the ball; however, I still cannot say that I actually play tennis”, the content of this sentence expresses that foreign people know how to communicate them by their language, but they cannot
Journal Response #3 1. The traditional symbols of American life are utilized well in the movie. They portray the main characters, who are indian, as those who play these sports that have long been characterized as american. They show the main character as a basketball star, and by doing this the movie kind of ridicules the stereotype that Indians cannot play a sport. The significance of the Native American characters reclaiming these symbols is to show that they also do/watch many of the things that an American would do.
