What can I gain by obtaining my college degree? I will gain the necessary knowledge and skills it takes to become successful in today’s modern workplace. By gaining my degree, I will become more marketable to elite companies, whom I hope to be employed by, which will allow me to better provide for my family. I knew that the financial obligation of attending college would be too expensive, so I decided to join the military. During my military career I did not take advantage of the opportunity of getting my degree. Needless to say not getting my degree at that time was one of the poorest decisions I have ever made. I was just living life and not thinking about my future. A couple years after the military, I came to the conclusion that it was time for a change. I needed to put away childish things and behaviors and act more responsibly. There are many advantages and disadvantages of furthering your education as an adult. The advantage that comes to light for me is during my life I have gained knowledge and wisdom from past experiences that will aid me in my college courses and assignments. On the other hand, the major disadvantage is juggling school and work. Another reason why I choose to return to school is because it would make me the first member of my family to obtain a college degree. Returning to school sends the message that it is never too late to achieve your goals. I am currently enrolled at Ashford University, majoring in Business Administration. One of my toughest classes to date is English. Ashford University has been very instrumental in me becoming an effective writer. In chapter 3 of my current class, English 121, I learned how to effectively select a topic and also how to structure a well-written essay (Sole, K. 2010).
