I think most people attend college or university maily because of three reasons, (1) career preparation, (2) to make friends, and (3) to learn more about other than their speciality. In the following paragraphs, I will explain these reasons in detail. First of all, we attend college/university because we want to be licenced for our speciality. To get a licence for a certain job, we have to train ourselves for a certain period. For example, in Japan, to be a medical doctor, we have to attend medical school for six years. Also, if we want to be a M.D.-Ph.D., who works on medicine both on clinically and philosophically, we have to attend another four years of graduate school. In Japan, to be a "philosophically" licenced medical doctor, we have to attend ten years of undergraduate and graduate school. Second, we don't attend college/university just because of the licence. In the college/university, we usually have classmates as we did in high school or junior high school. Also we usually attend group activities in our college/university. Usually in Japan, we call the activity, as a "club" or a "circle". In the club or circle activity, we have friends who also have same purpose or the future plan. With these friends, we can decide our future more precisely and socially. Finally, we attend college/university because we want to know more than our speciality. In college/university, many professors study on their speciality and teach their precious knowlege to the students. In most cases, in this internet-connected society, we can get information easily via our computer or by ordering the speciallized textbook on "Amazon.com". Although these technology give us much information and help us to save time, still the face to face teaching must be our special experience to get knowledge.
