If a person wears clothes that don’t match or look old, kids will say they are poor; so they must not be cool or they must be geeky. If a girl wears an outfit that is considered too revealing, she might be considered “cool and popular” or “skimpy and easy”. If a boy wears his pants really low or his shirts really long he might be known as a bully or tough guy. In earlier generations, there were groups known as jocks, brainiacs, punks, and preppies; today, the most common misconception is that every teen only cares about himself/herself; or gossip-ridden, hormone-raging, or out of control. Kids today are really no different than we were when we walked the halls of middle school and high school.
What is language discrimination? Language discrimination is when others treat you differently because of the way you speak. This goes both way as you could discriminate against someone because they speak in a manner you don’t accept. America is a country that is made up of many cultures
Sexism is defined in our textbook as any attitude, action, or institutional structure that subordinates a person because of his or her sex. What this is basically saying is that someone who is sexist will think differently and act negatively towards the opposite sex. Sometimes an individual can be sexist towards their own sex. Most western societies have minimal sexism and more racial hostilities. In other parts of the world sexism is more prominent because males have dominant roles over women and therefore look down upon them.
3. If a child is overweight and obese he will struggle to do PE at school as he won't have the energy and will get tired very quickly. This can cause his classmates to be annoyed with him for delaying the class due to his weight and they will bully him for it. This would leave the child feeling very hurt, embarrassed and he will lose his confidence and self-esteem. This will then effect his physical, social and emotional development.
Social life is even harder when a child is considered, or in some cases even labeled, an “outsider.” Being an outsider can mean that the child, boy or girl, speaks a different language, is the new kid in town, or even dresses differently. Growing up with a disability, a person is automatically labeled as an “outsider,” because they are different and in many cases require certain accommodations that others do not need. When kids are young they do not quite grasp the concept of what is wrong and what is right. Making fun of others for having a disability such as being deaf is wrong, but the younger kids are the crueler they could be. McElroy confirms this by stating that “society is brutal to those who are different.” Without speaking would be hard for Gauvin to make friends when conversation is hard for him to communicate with other kids and understand them.
1.1a Explain what is meant by: • Diversity: Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognising individual differences. These could be the difference of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. If a service user is being discriminated because of their disability for example this could cause upset for them, they may also feel like they aren't treated the same as someone who doesn't have a disability. 1.1b • Equality: Treating someone equal to everyone else no matter what ace, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs they have. Family may be effected by this to because if they are a different race then they may find they could get treated differently to.
Obese individuals might suffer from social insecurities and emotional suffering. Hollywood makes clear the emphasis on looks. Since looks are “very important,” obese people may become the butt of many jokes. Obese children are often ridiculed in school and many times suffer psychological damages. Obese teenagers may be hesitant to socialize with their peers since most people this age are self conscious and will likely make fun of the overweight teenager to make them feel better.
Andrew Turan Mrs.S.Roberts English III 27 February 2012 Asian American Lifestyle Many people think Asian American parenting might seem pushy and in some ways pressuring. These parent are always seen in public places and seem to be yelling and speaking harshly to their children. People believe Asian American children differ from whites and they are wright. What may seem pushy to majority of people is an everyday parental expectation to an Asian American child. Asian American parenting is extremely different from the white middle class, but that doesn’t also typically include demining and unloving coercion (Seal 2).
Other children may laugh at and bully the overweight child, which results in low self confidence and the child being embarrassed about himself. Obesity and being overweight is very often a consequence of bad diet and a low energy lifestyle, which has a negative effect on the physical, emotional and social development of a child. Disability in children is a factor which can hugely affect a child’s development. For example, being unable to walk would be a detriment to the child’s physical development, but be advantageous to his/her intellectual development as they would be more inclined to read or engage themselves in learning new skills. However, the child may also be left confused as to why he/she is different to the rest of the children which would affect the emotional, social and behavioural development of the child.
For instance, Johnny has tried and tried to fit in with the popular kids but they don’t want him part of their group because he is a darker skin color. Johnny accepts that he doesn’t belong with them and finds a group of kids that has the same color as he does. These kids regularly steal other peoples lunches, vandalize school property, and smoke after school. If Johnny were involved in an extracurricular activity, he would be less likely to fall into the foot steps of the bad kids and follow the children who stay out of trouble and have fun. Extracurricular activities supply children with structure, some discipline, and an activity that they enjoy.
