Why Did Islām spread so quickly? Islām is considered to be the 2nd largest worldwide religion in the world with consisting over 1,226,000,000 followers. Islām started to spread when Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation at a cave nearby Mount Hira. According to Muhammad, it was on this visit where Angel Gabriel squeezed him hard and caused words to flow from his mouth. The words said that Allah (pbuh) was the one god. No doubt a bit shaken, Muhammad reported the event to his wife (Khadijah) and her cousin but otherwise stayed silent. The words continued to come from there on. Why did Islām spread so quickly?? Muslim merchants traded products such as camel trains, bearing spices, perfumes, and precious metals. Trading helped spread Islām because in order to trade goods and materials needed, they would have to travel all over to different places. When traders reach their destination, they would preach to the traders about Islām and the way of life and how to live it. Islām is not just a religion that people just claim and worship; it’s in fact a way of life. So the traders would tell them about the Islāmic way of living with the five pillars and brief details about Islām. Some of the traders like the idea of the one God and their way of life, that way followers got convinced and changed their religion. To do that they would need to pay their tax, which made them a Malawi (a convert to Islām). As many Muslims were traders, foreign merchants traded goods with Muslim traders as they brought back Islāmic culture home. In this way Islām spread in the Middle East by sea routes and made its way through Mecca and South East Asia (Doc A).
