Hall COL 103 - 015 24, October 2012 What’s My Cheese and What To Do When Someone Moves It I recently read the book Who Moved My Cheese? While reading I drew several parallels between some of the characters and their positions and predicaments to my life and situations I have been in. I understand the message the book is trying to promote as embracing change and to look for the possibility for growth in change. The changes the characters in the book dealt with were forced upon them, as many changes in our own lives will be. The book is inspiring the reader to view change as a catalyst to promote growth and a new understanding of what motivates us individually. I identify most with the character Haw in the story. Everyone has likely heard the expression “Hem and Haw”, and knows it means to procrastinate or put off doing something. I wanted to find out what the word haw alone meant, besides the obvious meaning if you are sewing. Merriam-Webster dictionary says the first known use of the word hem was in the 15th century. It says haw “was often used to indicate a vocalized pause in speaking.” I thought this was still fitting because like the character in the story I often pause or delay when I am forced to react to a change that I did not orchestrate. I think we all realize we will be faced with change. One of the most important factors in dealing with change is identifying your personal motivation, your cheese. Just like the characters in the story, when change happens it most often threatens your state of happiness. That’s because our cheese is what makes us happy. Identifying your cheese may be one of the most difficult steps
