Whitewater Rafting Tourism Whitewater rafting is a very exciting and adventures form of tourism. Whitewater rafting is a sport that consists of people guiding and paddling a raft through whitewater, or a river's rapids. The sport's popularity began to grow when it became part of the Olympic Games in the 1970s. Today it's estimated that between nine and 10 million people have tried whitewater rafting. Whitewater rafting is very fun and enjoyable. I have gone whitewater rafting three times in my life. My favorite place that I went whitewater rafting was in Jackson Hole Wyoming. It was really fun there were some pretty treacherous spots. Whitewater rafting is a form of adventure tourism because you get a big adrenaline rush from it and you are taking a risk. When I say that you are taking a risk in whitewater rafting I mean that there are a lot of dangers involved in whitewater rafting. Dangers like drowning, heart attacks, hypothermia, and sunburn. On average 20 people die each year from whitewater rafting related deaths but 30% of those deaths are from heart attacks and heart failures. So it is recommended not to go whitewater rafting if you have or have had some sort of heart condition. For safety you are required to wear a life jacket and most whitewater rafting trips will also require you to wear a helmet. Whitewater rafting is a fairly expensive form of tourism. The average short day trip of (4-6 hours) costs about $80 dollars while longer trips go up to $150 and up per person. Rates vary depending on the time of year and the conditions. Whitewater rafting is very big tourism industry it brings in a lot of revenue and new business to the communities that have whitewater rafting trips and business in the community. The number one place to go whitewater rafting according to National Geographic is the Alsek and Tatshenshini Rivers that go through Alaska
