"Whispers in the Graveyard is an award-winning book by Theresa Breslin. The book centres on a boy called Solomon. Solomon is actually dyslexic but people don’t realize that he is dyslexic. At school he is the punch bag for class mates, and he gets tormented by his class teacher. His mum has left him and his father is always drunk. Because of the intimidation and separation Solomon faces he miss school most of the time and seeks refuge in his local cemetery. Basically the story is about Solomon saving his friend from a terrible spirit which is trying to possess individuals like Solomon’s and his friend As soon as you start reading the book you start to notice that the story is powerful and is skillfully told. Solomon is a Scottish boy in the final year of primary school, he is considered to be thick and lazy, however he is actually dyslexic. He is bullied by his form tutor at school, and at home by his father, who is revealed as also dyslexic drunken and neglectful person. Solomon regularly goes to the local cemetery for refuge. The local Graveyard is really frightening because nothing lives there except an ancient rowan tree, no birds, no flowers, nothing at all. One day when he is at the graveyard he overhears a discussion between council official and construction officer. He is upset to hear that his special place is going to become a construction site. When the workmen start to take down the tree that night Solomon has some bad dreams. Driven by his father’s bad behaviour when he drinks, Solomon decides to spend the night at the graveyard. When he is sitting hidden in his special place he hears a man screaming. As his eyes skim and scan trying to find the cause of the scream he witnesses one of the workmen being swallowed up by the ground after unearthing a mysterious chest marked with the word "Malefice"".
