Which Relationship Is Stronger? Romeo and Juliet's or George and Lennie's (of Mice and Men)

683 Words3 Pages
As you can tell by reading The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, have a very strong relationship, and no one can deny that. However, a stronger relationship surfaces in the book, Of Mice and Men. The relationship between George and Lennie is even stronger than Romeo and Juliet’s in many ways. Not only is it the kind of relationship George and Lennie have that makes it strong, but the time, and what they have been through together over the years. George and Lennie have a special type of relationship that tends to be extremely strong, and it is usually between an adult and child, it is the relationship between a parent and their kid. The reason that makes this relationship so unique to George and Lennie is the fact that they are both adults. Steinbeck shows this very well when Lennie lost his work card. “George… I ain’t got mine. I musta lost it.” This shows some of Lennie’s childlike behavior. George replies “Think I’d let you carry your own work card?” (Steinbeck 5) George is like a father to Lennie. Lennie is “jus’ like a big baby” (Steinbeck 90) He is George’s big baby. This relationship between Lennie and George is very powerful, much like the relationship a father has with his son. Then we move on the Star Crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, and they have a pretty bad relationship, it may be strong, but it is bad. One thing you can definitely pull from the text is the fact that she is 13. She "hath not seen the change of fourteen years" (Shakespeare 1:2:9) Well, that not bad, is it? Not until you find out Romeo’s age of 16-18 years old. That is a big difference, and in our society, that is frowned upon. Not only is there a huge age difference, but neither of them like each other for their personality! Not once do we have either Romeo or Juliet talk about each other’s personality.
