When Harry Met Sally Relationship Stages Analysis Cynthia Sera MWF 9:00-9:50 El Paso Community College When Harry Met Sally Relationship Stages Analysis Summary In 1977, both Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago. Harry’s girlfriend Sally is driving to New York City and Harry hitches a ride with her to New York City as well. On their way there, they argue whether a man and a woman can be friends without sex getting in the way. Harry states, “No man can be friends with a woman he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her.” (Reiner & Reiner 1989). In the end, they both settle that they can’t be friends and each go their own way in New York City. Five years later, in 1982, Harry and Sally coincidently share a plane flight. Harry finds out that Sally is in a relationship with his ex-neighbor Joe. While on the plane Harry tells Sally he is about to get married with his fiancé Helen. Once again, Harry explains why men and women can’t be friends, even if they’re in relationships with other people. Like Harry says, “The person you’re involved with can’t understand why you need to be friends with the person you friended. Like it means something is missing from the relationship and wanted to go outside to get it.” (Reiner & Reiner 1989). After the flight, they each, once again, go their own way. Five years have passed and Sally is having lunch with her friends Marie and Alice whom she tells that she and Joe are no longer together. At the same time, Harry is at a Giants football game with his friend Jess, whom he tells that he’s getting a divorce from his wife Helen. Later, Harry and Sally cross paths again but in a bookstore this time. This time they share dinner and discuss each other’s lives. From then on they become friends and start doing activities together. Then, Harry tries setting up Sally with his friend
