The opening chapter spoke of a sin that Amir had undertaken. “It was my past of unatoned sins,” right away Hosseini allows the reader to encapsulate the event which proved to be the turning point in Amir’s life. Everything that Amir did onwards was in the pursuit of redemption. The actions and decisions made by each character illustrated that sin and redemption are an inevitable part of human development and growth. There are many characters who undergo the process of sin and redemption. Baba’s sin amassed immense guilt in that he was meant to be a man of great honour and respect yet he was drawn into an affair with a Hazara woman. Rahim Khan wrote to Amir “Real good, was born out of your father’s remorse.” Baba saw redemption in feeding the poor, building the orphanage and giving money to friends in need. His search for redemption caused him to grow in character and ultimately become a better person. Sohrab asked ”Will god put me in hell for what I did to that man?” Sohrab sought forgiveness from both god and his father who he highly respected. Rahim Khan sought forgiveness from Amir for not telling him the truth. In Rahim Khan’s letter to Amir he said “I know that in the end, god will forgive. He will forgive your father, me, and you too... Forgive your father if you can, forgive me if you wish. Thus gaining absolute redemption is achieved by coming to terms with oneself, rather than relying on God to solve all of your problems. However Amir was the biggest illustration of human development through the process of sin and redemption. His betrayal of his only friend and half brother, Hassan, was the greatest of sins. From that point on Amir always sought redemption and never forgot what he had done.”I
