What to Choose: Alternative or Conventional Medicines The impact of science and technology on the development of medicines from ancient times till today are important in considering the ups and downs of the alternative and conventional medicines. Conventional medicines are defined as the scientifically based, pharmaceutical drug-oriented medicines. “Alternative medicines are defined as indigenous systems of healing often of long history, which are different from and usually predates conventional medicine. They are also called adjunctive, unconventional, or unorthodox therapies” (Wang). Alternative medicines include homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy, aromatherapy, chiropractic medicines, and reflexology among others (Allan 1-2). Today millions of people have trust in the accomplishment of medical sciences. Using scientific methods doctors have made it possible to do bypass surgeries, to change heart valve; even heart, kidney, and liver transplant are common today. Today DNA technology can manipulate genes, and several inherited disease can be prevented or cured. Infections that used to kill people can be treated with antibiotics. There are drugs to control all sort of pain. There are machines to regulate your diabetic control, blood pressure, regulate heartbeats and to restore your lost hearing. Conventional medicines are saving our today’s world from dying. Even after all these accomplishment why are we looking for an alternative to pills and machines? Modern medicines had helped to fix lots of problems that have developed in peoples bodies, but instead of getting better, more and more people are suffering from clogged arteries, cataracts, kidney and liver failure.
