I am a natural leader of people. When in doubt, I will not hesitate to get advice because failure is not an option to me. Some of the challenges that I will be faced with will be how to juggle a full time job, family and schooling. The reason for going back to school is not only to further my education for future work but also to be more proficient in assisting my children with their schoolwork. Technology has progressed to a point where I feel that I need do something to help me keep pace with the changing world.
I would like to show my family that education is very important, because it doesn't only affect you but everyone that is surrounded by you. I would like to set an example for my little sister, and younger cousins, that anything is possible, and that your education sets a path for your future that if you have a bright future you can have a beautiful life. I would also like God to be proud of me as well. Bishop Noll Institute offers a challenging academic environment, I clearly see it in the upperclassmen’s attitudes and the standards that they set for me as a freshman this year. The more I know the better opportunities will come my way in the future.
On this journey towards adulthood, to find our identity we could start to value different things in our lives as opposed to what we were taught by our parents. In most cases, our family may accept us as whoever we are, because they are our closest connection, the people who grew up with us and truly care for us. Acceptance is the key to one’s sense of belonging. Most of us discover our true identity throughout our time at high school. It is one of the prime times of our lives where we discover what we truly want to do or to want to be.
I did have some pressure from my parents to get good grades and to learn right from wrong. So the law of influence was a big thing because I wanted to be just like my parents. In my teen years, I was also using the law of influence because of how much I wanted to impress and get the approval of my parents. I guess through my whole life I was looking for approval from my elders in my life. I also wanted to grow up to do something to help people.
Then when I studied and got a good grade I was like “wow, I can do this” and felt a beam of confidence that I could do it for other classes as well. Adapting to the schoolwork is a big part of having confidence in the classroom because you understand what is being taught. Gatto said “schools are establish fixed habits of relation to authority. This of course, precludes critical judgement completely.”(152). Gatto is saying that schooling is made for kids to adapt to; it has adaptive qualities, therefore there is a chance for everyone to succeed if they really want to, but it takes away from any individual thinking.
Maybe, just maybe I was getting away with so many things, getting so many 2nd chances, and not dying for a reason. I don’t know how or why but I feel that I am destined to do something important or great for this world. Maybe by some unknown force, some call it fate, or perhaps destiny has given me such good luck and fortune because my purpose in the world is so significant nothing can get in my way. I am not religious but if there is a God he has a great plan for me and getting in trouble or dying is not part of it. I feel that I have some greater calling and reason to be on this earth.
Being the first person in my family to get a college degree makes me feel so good. Setting example for children and letting them see that mommy can do it is priceless. The things that we do in life as far as school wise are thing we can take us to the next level is just a lot of us lose hope we are not sure where to go. I though getting a high school diploma was fine for me. I felt school was not for me because I have dyslexic and, I feel people just don’t want to help me.
College students have short-term and long-term goals that they desire to achieve. Achieving a goal at any level would be a great accomplishment of mine. My objective is to work hard at improving my writing skills, having better study skills, and becoming an enhanced student overall. Once I graduate from GCU; I will have a higher level of communication skills, and confidence to become professional and skilled in all that I achieve. A college degree in Elementary Education is essential to me because I want to teach others the value of fun, learning, and the capability to be involved in exciting adventures throughout life.
I will be able to have an occupation that I thoroughly enjoy and at the same time will be able to afford a decent living for my children and myself. For me to complete my degree at this point in my life is very important. I feel that getting the opportunity to go back to school at my age is actually giving me a second chance to make something of myself. I think my children will see how hard I am working to achieve this certification and it will give them the desire to get a degree as well. I do not want them to struggle as I have these past
My choice to become a teacher was not made lightly. This decision was a culmination of a process of reflection about what I wanted to do with my life following 10 years in the naval service and another 4 years as a defense contractor. I have chosen a career in education because I believe that it is one of the most important functions performed in our culture. Since becoming a substitute teacher, I have come to realize that schools are the perfect institution to influence children on becoming positive and active members of society and I want to be a part of that process. I left a career in defense contracting to pursue a new path in life that would bring greater joy and lasting passion.
