What Makes Art Art

What makes art, art? To me, art is any piece that someone has put their time, effort, and individual skill in to. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant sculpture like Rodin’s The Kiss or a brilliant painting such as Chagall’s I and the Village to be considered art. While these are beautiful examples, they are in society’s specific picture of what “art” is, but art can be created by any one at any time. Photography is a good example of “nontraditional art” such as He Got Game by Robin Rhode, which seems to be both photography and a form of bodily expression.
When I see what I consider to be art, I respond to it as an individual piece of great skill and work. Especially when looking at what is considered to be a “traditional” piece of artwork, I try to think of what exactly the artist was feeling and their thoughts at the time of creating it. If their piece is strong enough for me to feel what they have put in to it, then I would think of that as a great piece of artwork.
The formal qualities of art are not all that important to me. It is more important, in my mind, the efforts the artist has taken and the meaning behind it. Being able to find the meaning of a piece, no matter what the medium used, is the most important aspect. I do feel that the content is very important. Without a good content, it is harder to try to figure out what the artist is trying to say through that particular piece. I do not feel that any type of art is less spectacular to any other. Each piece of art is important to its artist, and the thoughts of any other person should not take away from that.
From sculptors and painters to skilled welders and the simplest of crafters, anybody can create art. Basically whatever the creator considers to be art is, in fact, art. A mechanic that builds an automobile engine from scratch has created a piece of art by using his skills and
