17 May 2011 What Is the Good Life for Me? The good life is an idea which obviously can be defined in an almost infinite number of ways. If this question were tendered to me fifteen years ago, this is probably how I would have responded: “Just give me a free place to live, an unlimited supply of Miller High Life (yes, I used to drink the High Life), and season tickets to the Detroit Tigers (third-base line—of course).” Now, at thirty-three, I have a significantly different view on life. That’s the great thing about what this question poses. The answer ultimately lies in the moment; therefore, it is constantly evolving. Right now, for me, the good life involves two characteristics. They are my state of mind and my family. When it comes to living the good life, one thing that I feel is important is my state of mind. My belief that everything happens for a reason is what guides me through difficult times. Life is constantly throwing curve balls when you’re looking for that fastball right down the middle. For example, until eleven months ago I was a gainfully employed construction superintendent. I made a decent wage and had benefits. The company I worked for had been in business for fifty-seven years. Then one day, in our prime building season, I was told that they were going out of business. Now, without any warning and after fifteen years of employment, I was unemployed, and had no benefits and no idea what I was going to do. This is why an unwavering state of mind is so important when it comes to living the good life. I have always tried to live modestly, keeping money put away for a rainy day. Therefore, I knew I had time to establish a new career. Ultimately, it has steered me back to school to further my education and set myself up for a career with a little more job security.
