“What is Hypnosis?” Describe the psychological and physical aspects of hypnosis and discuss the role of relaxation in Hypnotherapy. What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is suggestion and relaxation according to Barrie St John – a leading authority in the field of self hypnosis and hypnotherapy. This would suggest the role of relaxation is essential in hypnotherapy and both psychological and physical aspects are equally very important. People often think curling up on the sofa reading a good book or having a cup of tea is relaxation. Real relaxation like the kind that is brought on by hypnosis “has a fantastic effect on all the systems of the body – emotional, psychological, and physical.” It lets you experience a deeper form of relaxation which penetrates the subconscious. I will discuss in depth later in my essay. To further look at early definitions of hypnosis, Wikipedia notes “Braid defined hypnotism as a state of mental concentration that often leads to a form of progressive relaxation”. In 2005, the Society for Psychological Hypnosis, Division 30 of the American Psychological Association (APA), published the following formal definition: “When using hypnosis, one person (the subject) is guided by another (the hypnotist) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behaviour”. All definitions suggest that hypnosis can be linked to a change in behaviour through suggestion and relaxation. Through my research, I have found the truth about hypnosis is, that you have been in this state many times during your life. Remember the time you have drove down the motorway and reached your friends house without consciously thinking about how you got there or you have been sat in a presentation and the speakers voice has made you feel drowsy and it did not matter what you did, you could
