What is hiking? Hiking is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural environments, often in mountainous areas on hiking trails. It is such a popular activity that there are numerous hiking organizations worldwide. The health benefits of different types of hiking have been confirmed in studies. In hiking there are equipment, hazards, and different benefits you have to be aware of. The equipment required for hiking depends on the length of the hike, and according to the source. Hikers usually carry the basic needs such as water, food, and a map in a well maintained backpack. Hiking boots are often used to protect themselves from rough terrain. Some organizations usually suggest more detailed equipment such as a compass, sunglasses, sunscreen, clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, fire starter, and knife. Other organizations suggest additional items such as insect repellent, an emergency blanket, and even a GPS. Currently a GPS navigation device is a great help especially when hiking in unknown territories or in weather conditions with low visibility. Till this day advocates for ultralight backpacking claim that long lists of required items for multi-day hikes increases pack weight, therefore increases fatigue and chance of injury. They recommend a goal of smart reduced pack weight in order to hike long distances easier. The use of hiking boots for long-distance hikes is controversial among these proponents of ultra-light backpackers, due to their weight. Hiking has their threats and these threats can be quite dangerous. Circumstances while hiking such as sickness or accidents may occur. Diarrhea has been found to be one of the most common illness afflicting long-distance hikers in the United States. Losing the way, inclement weather, hazardous terrain, or exacerbation of pre-existing medical are also dangerous conditions that could be met while
