What Is Friendship?

SARAH DIAZ Friendship Friendship is rooted in trust and expressed in openness. It is measured in giving and founded in love. The Webster’s Dictionary defines friendship as, “the quality or state of being friendly”. One would think that this definition is correct, but unfortunately, it is not practical. There are two kinds of friends, genuine and bogus. Most people have experienced both types of friendships. It’s sad to think that one can be hypocritical enough to fake a relationship. And unfortunately “bogus friends” are the most believable. So if it’s no obvious enough, friendship isn’t just about “being friendly”. Friendship is about both people in the relationship giving and taking from and the other person. Friendship is much like being in a romantic relationship. In a romantic relationship there are always compromises being made to keep the relationship growing, and the same thing goes for a friendship. If one person in the friendship is constantly taking and not giving, that wouldn’t be defined as “friendly”. Friendship isn’t only about giving and compromises it is also about honor and loyalty. Most people know the expression “dogs are a man’s best friend”. Most people don’t know why though. Dogs, unlike some people, are loyal. Loyalty is one of those attributes that makes a genuine friend. Loyalty towards someone grows as the relationship grows. The more loyal two people are to each other, reduces the chances of that friendship ending. After all, the reason most friendships end is because someone lied or turned their back on the other. Another essential in order to have a friendship is trust. There needs to be trust in a friendship in order to even have a simple conversation. A relationship is built on trust and integrity. Unfortunately, in “bogus friendships” one can form a false sense of security and divulge all their inner most thoughts,
