What is Fear of Flying? Have you ever flown on an airplane? How did you feel about it? Business people often find that flying is boring because they have to fly all the time. Some people are excited while flying. However, some people feel terror when they board an airplane because they have fear of flying. It is an anxiety disorder. Depending on each person, the fear of flying includes of the following fears such as fear of unsafe, fear of heights, fear of being in an enclosed space, and fear of unknown and loss of control. First, according to the Boeing survey, about six percent of people think that flying is not safe. They concern about airline accidents due to bad weather conditions. Therefore, many people refuse to fly although they travel frequently. For short trips, they choose driving. For long trips, they take trains and even boats to the destinations. Second, some people do not want to fly because they are afraid of the heights. They avoid the high places. When they stand in a sky-scraper or a high building, they are afraid to look out from the windows. They feel like they would fall down, therefore, these people will have the feeling that they would fall out of the airplanes when flying. When the plane takes off, these people often feel dizzy. They will close their eyes and clutch both hands on the seats. For some people, they can’t stand staying in an enclosed place or small place like in an elevator or a tunnel on a high way. Thus, when they get on an airplane, they have to face up to a narrow space and can’t get out until the end of the flight. They endure their fear in several hours; even some transcontinental flights last all day long. That’s why these people find flying is terrifying.
